Onestream broadband: What's on offer?

Lyndsey Burton
This broadband comparison is produced and maintained by Choose, under the editorial oversight of Lyndsey Burton, Founder & Managing Director.

Onestream is a UK broadband provider offering competitively priced full fibre (FTTP) and part fibre (FTTC) connections over the Openreach network.

Full fibre broadband is now available to over 20 million premises, while part fibre services with speeds of 30Mb or more reach around 94% of UK homes.

Customers can choose from a range of broadband speeds, including:

  • Fibre 40
  • Fibre 80
  • Full Fibre 80
  • Full Fibre 115
  • Full Fibre 220
  • Full Fibre 550
  • Full Fibre 990

Onestream focuses on keeping headline prices low, particularly for customers who already have their own router, as supplying your own equipment reduces the monthly cost.

Customers can choose from a range of routers, including a lower-cost WiFi 4 model on part fibre (FTTC) plans, or upgrade to WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 hardware on full fibre packages. Optional add-ons include a WiFi booster for £4.95 per month and a static IP address for £2.50 per month.

Onestream also offers additional services such as enhanced support (Onestream Priority Plus, £7.95 per month) and security software (McAfee Multi Access, free for the first month then £34.95 per year). These services may be included automatically during sign-up and will need to be cancelled if not wanted.

Broadband plans are available on 12- or 24-month contracts, with shorter terms typically carrying a higher monthly price and setup cost.

Availability of Onestream broadband

Onestream broadband is available across most of the UK using the Openreach network.

Full fibre (FTTP) broadband is currently available to over 20 million premises, covering around 60% of UK homes, with Openreach continuing to expand its rollout.

In areas where full fibre is not yet available, customers can still order Onestream broadband using part fibre (FTTC) technology. This connects fibre to a nearby street cabinet, with a copper line completing the connection to the home, and is available to around 94% of UK premises.

Openreach is targeting 25 million premises for full fibre coverage by the end of 2026, meaning availability of faster Onestream plans will continue to grow.

Onestream broadband speeds

Onestream offers a range of broadband speeds over the Openreach network, with faster full fibre (FTTP) plans available in some areas and part fibre (FTTC) connections elsewhere.

In full fibre areas, customers can choose from speeds ranging from 80Mb up to around 900Mb, with more consistent performance as fibre is delivered directly to the home.

The average download and upload speeds of Onestream full fibre plans are:

Average download speed Average upload speed
Full Fibre 80 80Mb 20Mb
Full Fibre 115 115Mb 20Mb
Full Fibre 220 220Mb 30Mb
Full Fibre 550 550Mb 75Mb
Full Fibre 990 990Mb 115Mb

In areas without full fibre, Onestream offers part fibre (FTTC) broadband with speeds of up to 40Mb or 80Mb.

Because part fibre connections rely on a copper phone line between the street cabinet and your home, actual speeds can vary depending on distance and line quality. Homes further from the cabinet may receive lower speeds than the advertised average.

The average download and upload speeds of Onestream part fibre plans are:

Average download speed Average upload speed
Fibre 40 40Mb 10Mb
Fibre 80 80Mb 20Mb

Advertised average speeds must be achievable by at least 50% of customers during peak hours (typically between 8pm and 10pm), in line with UK advertising standards.

When you sign up, you'll be given a personalised speed estimate and a minimum guaranteed download speed. If your connection consistently falls below this level and the issue cannot be resolved, you may be able to leave your contract without penalty.

New customer offers

The prices shown in the table above are available to new Onestream customers, typically requiring you not to have held an account with the provider in the last 3 months.

Onestream's offers are usually based on discounted monthly pricing for the duration of the minimum contract term, rather than short-term promotions or extras.

Key terms for Onestream broadband deals

Onestream broadband is typically sold on a 24-month contract, with a 12-month option available at a higher monthly cost and upfront fee.

Onestream applies an annual price increase of £2.75 per month from 1 April each year. Customers who join between 1 January and 31 March will not see this increase until the following April.

If you cancel before the end of your minimum term, early termination charges will apply. These may include remaining monthly fees, unpaid setup or activation costs, and charges for equipment.

Broadband equipment must be returned within 14 days of the service ending, otherwise additional charges will apply.

Onestream's pricing is based on a lower headline monthly cost, with additional charges for routers and add-ons. Support and security add-ons may be included automatically during sign-up and must be cancelled to avoid charges if not wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What router comes with Onestream broadband?

Onestream allows customers to choose their router, or reduce monthly costs by using their own equipment.

Customers taking an Onestream router can choose from three options:

  • Standard router (WiFi 4, TP-Link 300) - £2.95 per month
  • Superstream router (WiFi 5, TP-Link Archer VR1210v) - £4.95 per month
  • Superstream+ router (WiFi 6, TP-Link VX230v) - £5.95 per month

The Standard router is a basic single-band device suited to light usage, while the Superstream and Superstream+ models offer dual-band WiFi, improved speeds, and better support for multiple devices.

The Superstream+ WiFi 6 router supports newer technologies such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO, helping to improve performance in busy households with many connected devices, along with beamforming to extend wireless coverage.

Both upgraded routers support mesh WiFi, allowing customers to add boosters to improve coverage in larger homes.

Alternatively, customers can use their own router, which reduces the monthly cost of the broadband plan.

Onestream also offers a WiFi booster for £4.95 per month for those who need to extend wireless coverage further.

Can I use my own router with Onestream broadband?

Yes. Onestream allows customers to use their own broadband router instead of taking one of its paid router options.

To connect your own equipment, you'll need your DSL login credentials, which are provided on your go-live day so you can authenticate your connection.

It's your responsibility to choose a compatible router for your connection type, and Onestream does not provide setup support for third-party devices.

Using your own router can reduce the monthly cost of your broadband plan, but you'll need to ensure it supports the required connection type and speeds.

Can I get a home phone line with Onestream broadband?

Onestream broadband is primarily sold as a data-only service, and a home phone line is not typically included or offered during the standard sign-up process.

While the provider has previously offered digital phone services, these are not prominently available on current plans, and most customers will use their broadband connection alongside mobile or app-based calling instead.

What is Onestream Priority?

Onestream Priority is an add-on service that provides enhanced customer support, including faster fault handling and additional cover for issues inside the home.

The service replaces the older Onestream Assured product and is now typically offered as Onestream Priority Plus, which costs £7.95 per month.

It may be included as part of your order during sign-up and is provided on a monthly rolling basis. Customers who do not want the service will need to cancel it to avoid ongoing charges.

Is McAfee Multi Access included with Onestream broadband?

McAfee Multi Access may be included as part of your order during sign-up.

It is typically free for the first month, after which it renews at £34.95 per year unless cancelled.

Once the paid subscription begins, it is provided on a 12-month contract. Customers who do not want the service need to cancel during the initial free period to avoid being charged.
