Gigaclear Broadband: What's on offer?

Lyndsey Burton
This broadband comparison is produced and maintained by Choose, under the editorial oversight of Lyndsey Burton, Founder & Managing Director.

Gigaclear provides full fibre (FTTP) broadband to homes and businesses, focusing primarily on rural and harder-to-reach areas that have historically had limited connectivity.

The network is concentrated across parts of central and southern England, including counties such as Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Essex, Northamptonshire and Wiltshire, with further rollout in areas of Devon, Somerset and Yorkshire.

Gigaclear typically builds in locations where full fibre is not widely available, meaning many properties receive a full fibre connection for the first time where it is deployed.

Customers can choose from a range of straightforward broadband plans, including:

  • Ultrafast 300
  • Ultrafast 400
  • Hyperfast 900

All plans offer symmetrical speeds, meaning upload speeds match downloads, which can improve performance for video calls, cloud storage and file sharing.

Packages include a dual-band WiFi 6 Linksys Velop router as standard. Customers taking Ultrafast 400 or Hyperfast 900 also receive Gigaclear's Smart WiFi Mesh system, with a second node included to help extend coverage around the home.

Plans are otherwise simple, with optional add-ons including a digital home phone line and additional mesh WiFi nodes for larger properties.

Availability of Gigaclear broadband

Gigaclear operates a growing full fibre (FTTP) network focused primarily on rural and underserved parts of England. Its network now passes around 600,000 premises, with ongoing expansion supported by both private investment and government-backed Project Gigabit contracts.

The company aims to extend coverage to around one million premises by 2027, although rollout is targeted and location-specific rather than nationwide.

Availability is concentrated across parts of southern and central England, including counties such as Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Essex, Northamptonshire and Wiltshire, alongside newer build areas in Devon, Somerset and Yorkshire.

Gigaclear typically builds in rural towns and villages where full fibre coverage is limited, meaning it often provides the first full fibre connection available in those areas.

Gigaclear broadband speeds

Gigaclear delivers a range of ultrafast and gigabit-capable broadband speeds using its full fibre (FTTP) network, which connects directly to the property.

Customers can choose from the following broadband speed tiers:

Average download speed Average upload speed
Ultrafast 300 300Mb 300Mb
Ultrafast 400 400Mb 400Mb
Hyperfast 900 900Mb 900Mb

All Gigaclear packages offer symmetrical speeds, meaning upload speeds match downloads. This can provide more consistent performance for tasks such as video calls, cloud backups, large file transfers and online gaming.

Because Gigaclear uses full fibre connections directly to the home, speeds are not affected by distance from the street cabinet, helping maintain performance during peak usage times.

Advertised average speeds must be achievable by at least 50% of customers at peak times (typically between 8pm and 10pm), in line with UK advertising standards.

Compared with Openreach-based full fibre and cable broadband services, Gigaclear's symmetrical speeds can offer an advantage for households that regularly upload data as well as download it.

New customer offers

Gigaclear typically offers discounted pricing for new customers during the initial 18-month minimum term, with free setup and installation included.

Customers taking faster plans, such as Ultrafast 400 and Hyperfast 900, also receive a Smart WiFi Node at no extra cost to help extend wireless coverage around the home.

Key terms of Gigaclear broadband

Gigaclear broadband deals come with a minimum contract term of 18 months. If you leave before the end of this period, early termination charges may apply.

Pricing terms depend on when you signed up. Customers who joined before 1 March 2022 are not subject to mid-contract price rises, as these contracts were offered with fixed pricing.

Customers who signed up between March 2022 and September 2024 are subject to annual price increases of CPI + 3.5%, typically applied in October using the July CPI figure.

For contracts taken out from September 2024 onwards, Gigaclear now uses a "prices may rise" model. If prices do increase, customers must be given notice and have the option to leave their contract without early termination charges if they do not accept the change.

Gigaclear supplies Linksys Velop routers with its broadband packages, including those with Smart WiFi mesh. These devices remain the property of Gigaclear and must be returned if you end your service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What network does Gigaclear broadband use?

Gigaclear operates its own independent full fibre (FTTP) network, rather than using Openreach or other wholesale providers.

The network is built using a mix of private investment and government-backed funding, with a focus on connecting rural and underserved areas.

Because it is a full fibre network, connections are delivered directly to the property and do not require a traditional phone line or line rental.

What areas does Gigaclear cover?

Gigaclear broadband is available in selected rural towns and villages across central and southern England, including parts of Wiltshire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Essex and Northamptonshire, as well as newer rollout areas in Devon, Somerset and Yorkshire.

Coverage is location-specific, as Gigaclear focuses on building full fibre networks in areas that are less well served by other providers.

How much does Gigaclear broadband cost?

Gigaclear broadband packages start from around £16 per month during the initial 18-month contract term, although prices vary depending on the plan and any current offers.

Customers can add a digital home phone service, with Evening & Weekend calls available for £6 per month, or an Anytime call plan for £11 per month.

Gigaclear also offers a Smart WiFi add-on for £6 per month, which includes additional mesh nodes to help improve wireless coverage in larger homes.

What router comes with Gigaclear broadband?

Gigaclear provides customers with a Linksys Velop dual-band WiFi 6 router as standard with its broadband packages.

This is a mesh-capable router designed to deliver reliable whole-home coverage, with support for multiple devices and high-speed full fibre connections. It uses internal antennas and a quad-core processor to manage network traffic efficiently, and includes Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired connections.

The router is part of Linksys' Velop mesh system, meaning additional nodes can be added to extend coverage and create a single seamless WiFi network throughout the home.

Customers can add Gigaclear's Smart WiFi option, which includes an additional Velop node to improve coverage in larger properties. Some higher-speed plans also include a second node at no extra cost.

For most households, a single router is suitable for smaller homes, while mesh nodes can help eliminate WiFi dead zones in larger or multi-storey properties.

Does Gigaclear offer a WiFi guarantee?

Yes. Gigaclear offers Smart WiFi and Smart WiFi Plus, which use Linksys Velop mesh nodes to extend wireless coverage throughout the home.

These plans include a WiFi guarantee of at least 10Mb in every room, helping ensure a usable connection across the property.

Customers taking the Ultrafast 400 or Hyperfast 900 plans receive Smart WiFi with one additional node included at no extra cost, while other customers can add the service for £6 per month.

Additional nodes can be added where needed to improve coverage in larger homes.

Is Gigaclear faster than BT Openreach or Sky?

Gigaclear offers symmetrical speeds, meaning upload speeds match downloads. This can make it faster than Openreach-based providers such as BT and Sky, as well as Virgin Media, where upload speeds are typically lower than downloads.

In terms of download speed, Gigaclear offers similar performance to other full fibre providers, with top-tier plans reaching around 900Mb. The main difference is in upload performance rather than headline download speeds.
