Sky Sports Plus: Overview

By combining on-demand live streams with a dedicated live channel, Sky Sports+ aims to increase the content available to users with the capability to show up to 100 live events concurrently.

Sky Sports+ consists of additional on-demand live and pre-recorded content available through existing TV platforms as well as a new Sky Sports+ linear channel.

The new service is now available to all existing subscribers of the Sky Sports Complete pack on the following pay TV service at no extra cost:

  • Sky Stream
  • Sky Glass
  • Sky Q
  • Virgin Media TV 360
  • Virgin Media Flex
  • NOW
  • Sky Sports mobile app

TalkTalk, BT and EE TV customers will also now be able to access Sky Sports+ through the NOW app.

Sky say Sky Sports+ will be transformational in terms of the sheer amount of content and matches that will be broadcast, and will also enable them to evolve the service and find new ways to deliver sports content to customers.

As well as more content, Sky Sports+ brings new features including more immersive viewing experiences, the ability to pause and rewind on all concurrent streams, and the 'Recap' feature on Premier League and Championship games will also come to the EFL matches.

Where can I watch Sky Sports+?

Sky Sports+ is supported on Sky Stream, Sky Glass and Sky Q, although older satellite-only boxes, like the Sky+ HD box, won't work as Sky Sports+ relies on an Internet connection.

It's also available to Virgin Media customers who have the TV 360 or Stream box sets.

However, its NOW customers who may benefit the most from Sky Sports+, with new features, including pause and rewind live TV, available on both the Sky Sports Day Membership and Sky Sports Month Membership plans for the first time.

While customers with older box sets won't be able to enjoy most of the new Sky Sports+ content, those with either the Virgin V6 or Sky+ boxes will still gain the Sky Sports+ linear channel as long as they have a full subscription to the Sky Sports pack.

Virgin Media's Bigger Bundle + Sports also includes Sky Sports+ as well as the Sky Sports mobile app, and customers can also view in UHD for an extra £7 monthly fee if they want to.

While BT's option looks more expensive, it's worth bearing in mind the Big Sport pack includes both Sky Sports and TNT Sports, as well as the Eurosport 1 & 2 channels. However, note that customers will have to pay £6 more just to view the channels in HD.

How does Sky Sports+ work?

Sky Sports+ makes use of new streaming technologies to enable Sky to broadcast as many as 100 live matches and events at the same time.

As a result, customers can now watch many more live streams on-demand, with updated app features to help users find the games and events they want to watch.

New personalisation features will help customers to follow their favourite teams and leagues more easily, as well as a multi-sports scores section to cover fixtures and live scores beyond the standard 7-day football calendar.

The new linear Sky Sports+ channel also broadcasts the most popular matches and highlights in a more standardised way, and has replaced the previous Sky Sports Arena channel.

Launched at the start of the new EFL football season, Sky Sports+ will broadcast every game from across all three divisions - the Championship, League One and League Two - which will be a first for the UK, signalling the significance of the new Sky Sports Plus service.

New features will also include the ability to pause and rewind live streams, something that will be a first for NOW TV users, as well as an expansion of the 'Recap' feature on Premier League and Championship games to also include EFL games too.

What sporting fixtures will be on Sky Sports+?

Sky Sports Plus launched at 6pm on Thursday 8th August 2024 with a preview of the EFL, with the first matches starting on Friday 9th August when the new Sky Sports+ channel showed Preston North End v Sheffield United, while Blackburn Rovers v Derby County was broadcast on Sky Sports football.

On the same day, Sky Sports+ on-demand streaming also provided live viewing of the Barnsley v Mansfield Town League One game.

Sky Sports+ continued over the first weekend by showing every opening EFL game live, with a selection of games broadcast on the Sky Sports+ linear channel and Sky Sports football channel.

As well as four times more EFL matches, including every Carabao Cup fixture and all 72 teams featured over 20 times a season, Sky Sports+ will also increase coverage of rugby, golf and tennis.

Every match from the men's Super League will be available on Sky Sports+, as well as coverage from the ATP & WTA Tours, the US Open, and PGA Tour.

Customers will also gain access to exclusive sports documentaries two weeks before anyone else, including the much-awaited Darts documentary.

Summary: Where to watch Sky Sports+

Sky Sports Plus is now available with any full subscription to Sky Sports.

The cheapest way to access the new service is with Sky TV, with further discounts available for those who bundle Sky broadband from just £17 per month as well. Customers with Sky also benefit from Sky Entertainment and Netflix in the base pack.

NOW and TalkTalk are other options, however, content is more limited with these two providers, although the ability to pause and rewind live matches with Sky Sports+ will be warmly welcomed by any existing NOW users.

While cheaper prices exist elsewhere, Virgin Media do include Sky Sports and Sky Sports+ in full 1080p HD as standard, as well as options to upgrade to Ultra HD viewing, and easy access to more content overall.

Ultimately, Sky Sports+ brings a lot more content to sports fans, and undeniably ups the value for money of the Sky Sports pack.
