Why choose Virgin Media?
The fastest broadband network
Virgin Media may not have the biggest broadband network in the UK, but they have the fastest of all the major providers. Unlike many other providers who rely on Openreach to provide an internet connection to their customers, Virgin Media operate their own network, which enables them to invest in their broadband service to a greater extent than certain other suppliers. Because of this, they've been able to make their network extraordinarily fast as standard, so that all of their customers - and not just those who pay for the most premium services - can experience quick download speeds.
TV that puts the viewer in control
By signing up for a Virgin Media broadband and TV package, customers will benefit from Virgin's TV box, which enables them to record six shows at once while watching a seventh they taped earlier. Not only that, but it also allows the customer to record several hundred hours of television, and search for their favourite programmes, regardless of whether these programmes are being broadcast live or are on Catch Up.
Lots of channels
As well as the Virgin TV box, anyone who chooses a Virgin Media TV and Broadband offer will also enjoy a wide selection of channels catering for all tastes. These include all the established favourites you'd find on terrestrial television and Freeview. And depending on the package chosen, they also include a whole range of premium channels and Sky stations, such as Sky 1, Sky Cinema and Sky Sports.
More reliable customer service
And on the off-chance that things go wrong, Virgin Media provide a dedicated customer service hotline, which is open seven days a week from 8.00am to 10.00pm. They even offer online chat and a Virgin Remote Assistance service, which customers can use to solve issues without having to book an appointment for an engineer to visit them at home.
What extras are there?
Given that Virgin Media are the fastest major broadband provider in the UK, their network is ideal for Netflix viewers and fans of other over-the-top television. However, while it's possible to subscribe to Netflix as an optional extra, it doesn't come with any Virgin Media broadband and TV deal as standard. As such, customers will have to pay the usual Netflix subscription rate in order to watch it. Read more on where to watch Netflix here.
Virgin TV Anywhere
In addition to great television and fast broadband, customers will also be able to download the Virgin TV Anywhere App, which allows them to view most of the channels they receive as part of their package on as many as two devices. What’s good about this service is that it can even be paired up with the free access Virgin Media provide their subscribers to wi-fi on the London Underground, permitting people to watch their favourite shows on the morning or evening commute.
Important things to remember
While Virgin Media are a major telecoms provider covering most of the UK, their services might not be available everywhere. In order to ensure that a TV and broadband connection from them is available, customers should therefore use the postcode checker at the top of this page.
Virgin Media do provide the fastest broadband of any of the major broadband providers in the UK, yet at certain times of the day they may slightly slow down - or "throttle" - the upload speeds customers receive. Generally, they do this during peak hours when many people are using their network, so that it isn't overloaded with traffic, and so that all their customers receive an equal service. However, even if this can result in customers' upload speeds falling below the maximum at certain hours, it doesn't effect the download speeds they receive, which is the most important thing when surfing the web and streaming media content.
Since Virgin Media operate their own network and don't use Openreach, it's possible to sign up for a broadband and TV deal with them without having to get a landline. However, they do offer a range of landline services for those who do need a home phone, so it's worth considering if new customers wish to save money by bundling their various services together.
As with other broadband providers, customers are required to pay an activation fee when they first order a Virgin Media TV and broadband deal. While such fees have a tendency to change, they should be the same across all bundles.
Often, Virgin Media TV and broadband bundles are offered to customers with a special discount on the monthly subscription fee. As a result, customers should be mindful that when their first contract expires - usually after 12 months - they'll be moved onto a more expensive monthly rate. This is standard industry practice, yet if customers aren't happy with paying a different fee they should either phone Virgin Media in order to haggle, or switch to a provider that offers a better price.
