Full fibre broadband often comes without a landline as standard, including plans from BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Hyperoptic and Community Fibre.
Virgin Media also offer broadband without a landline, and their broadband-only packages cost much less than those with a phone line.
For those not yet covered by full fibre, BT, Plusnet, and Direct Save Telecom, all offer broadband without a phone line, although, prices aren't always cheaper.

However, despite other providers include a home phone line as standard, such as NOW Broadband, Sky, and Vodafone, their prices aren't always more expensive.
As such, it's always a good idea to compare broadband by price using our free broadband postcode checker, before ruling a deal out simply because it includes a home phone line.
NOW Broadband, for example, is one of the UK's cheapest broadband plans, yet comes with a home phone line with pay as you go calls and line rental included in the monthly price.
Virgin Media
Virgin Media were the first broadband provider to offer customers broadband without a phone line, and for those who live in a Virgin Media enabled area they currently offer some of the cheapest broadband-only plans.
Here are their latest broadband-only prices:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |

M125 Fibre Broadband | 132Mb average | £25 | Free | 18 months | |

At the time of writing, broadband only plans from Virgin Media range from £3 to £10 less per month - with the biggest savings on the faster packages and M125.
M125 broadband only is also reduced to just £24 per month, making it one of the cheapest broadband plans in the UK today.
Virgin Media's range of Volt bundles come with a digital phone line and free UK weekend calls and these bundles are often cheaper than the broadband and phone equivalent packages without Volt. So, Volt is where to look if a home phone line is a necessity.
Virgin Media is available to over 16 million premises across the UK, with the fastest broadband speed of 1.13Gbps. They also have ambitious rollout targets, aiming to reach a further 7 million premises - 23 million in total - by the end of 2026.

Full fibre broadband without a phone line
Full fibre broadband has now reached nearly 70% of the UK, and is provided by either Openreach or a range of independent broadband networks.
Openreach's network has now passed over 15 million premises, and they have ambitious rollout targets to reach 25 million premises by the end of 2026.
Full fibre broadband works by installing a fibre optic cable directly into a customer's home, entirely bypassing the existing phone line network.
As a result, most full fibre broadband packages come without a landline, and where a phone line is included it will be a digital line provided over the broadband connection.
What this also means, is that rather than customers being able to save money by going without a home phone line, it's more that they would now have to pay more to get one.
The full fibre broadband providers that come without a phone line as standard include:
- BT
- Plusnet
- TalkTalk
- Hyperoptic
- Community Fibre
- Gigaclear
Sky, NOW Broadband, and Vodafone are notable exceptions to this list as they include a home phone line as standard with all their full fibre broadband packages.
Here's some of the latest deals available for full fibre broadband without a phone line:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Full Fibre 145 | 145Mb average | £28.99 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Save over £11/mth + No setup fee + Exclusive offers and discounts for Plusnet customers (Ends 16/10/2024) | |||||
Full Fibre 65 | 77Mb average | £28 | Free | 18 months | |

For those wanting to go phone-line free to save money, a standard broadband comparison is worth carrying out, because Sky, NOW Broadband, and Vodafone, often offer cheaper prices even with a digital phone line included.
For example, right now, NOW Broadband and Vodafone both offer low prices on their full fibre plans:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Full Fibre 75 | 75Mb average | £23 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Free setup | |||||
Full Fibre 74 | 73Mb average | £24 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: £2 off for Vodafone pay monthly customers | |||||
Superfast Broadband | 61Mb average | £26 | £5 | 24 months | |
Offer: WiFi Max just £3/mth + (£5 refundable setup fee for new customers if applicable) |
It's also worth noting a few full fibre broadband providers don't offer the option to add a home phone at all, which includes TalkTalk, Plusnet, and Gigaclear. Whereas customers who sign up to BT can still take a phone line if they're happy to pay extra for it.
Independent full fibre providers
Smaller full fibre networks including Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Fibrus, and Gigaclear generally focus on a specific area, with Gigaclear targeting underserved rural areas, Community Fibre operating solely in London, and Fibrus having a large presence in Northern Ireland.
All of these providers give customers the option of cheaper broadband without a home phone line, with Hyperoptic deals around £2 cheaper each month, Community Fibre £10 cheaper, and Fibrus £9.99 cheaper.
As mentioned, Gigaclear don't offer customers the option of adding a home phone line.
Here are some of their most popular phone line free deals:

Part-fibre broadband without a landline
While over 80% of UK homes can now access either a full fibre broadband provider or Virgin Media, there is still more than 15% who can't.
For those the gigabit rollout has yet to reach, broadband without a phone line is still available, but from fewer providers, as the technology still relies on the phone network.
Superfast broadband is available to 98% of the UK, and uses fibre to the cabinet connections, with the last mile of cabling to a customer's home being the existing copper telephone network.
Until recently, superfast broadband packages always came with a home phone line, yet due to the upcoming closure of the copper phone line network, providers are already moving customers onto phone line free connections, or digital lines, although usually with the option to add a home phone line if they want it.
This includes:
- BT
- Plusnet
- Direct Save Telecom
- Zen Internet
BT
BT is the largest and most well-known broadband provider in the UK, and they offer broadband without a phone line across both superfast and full fibre packages.
Because BT is in charge of closing the copper phone line network, it's no surprise all of their broadband plans for new customers have already ditched the phone line, with only the option of a digital line.
Broadband-only plans cost £5 less than taking a digital line with BT. Here is the latest pricing of their superfast plans available to 98% of the UK:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fibre Essential | 36Mb average | £29.99 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Free setup (was £31.99) (Ends 14/10/2024) | |||||
Fibre 2 | 67Mb average | £29.99 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: £50 BT Reward Card + Save £7/mth + Free setup (Ends 17/10/2024) |
Where the Openreach full fibre network is available to a particular property however, they'll be connected to full fibre regardless of the download speed they choose.
One thing that's worth bearing in mind when it comes to BT is their prices tend to be on the higher side, and people may find it cheaper to get a broadband and phone deal from another provider, than go phone line free with BT, despite the £5 monthly saving.
If you're on a budget, find out the cheapest broadband packages in our guide, or read more about BT broadband in our review.
Direct Save Telecom
Direct Save Telecom are a smaller broadband provider that resells access to the Openreach network with both superfast and full fibre plans.
Unconventionally, their superfast broadband is phone line free by default, which saves customers £2.95 on taking a phone line with pay as you go calls.
Here is their latest superfast broadband without a phone line pricing:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Superfast Fibre 35Mb | 35Mb average | £31.95 | £8.95 | 12 months | |
Offer: Loyalty Discount Club (worth £49.95) | |||||
Superfast Fibre 63Mb | 63Mb average | £34.95 | £8.95 | 12 months | |
Offer: Loyalty Discount Club (worth £49.95) |
Direct Save Telecom offer cheap prices, but they don't appear in any of Ofcom's independent research into customer service, which makes them a bit of an unknown, however they do have good Trustpilot ratings with a Trustscore of 4.0 out of 5 from over 1,900 reviewers.
Plusnet
Plusnet removed phone lines from their broadband deals in August 2023, and now no longer offer new customers the choice to add one, even on their superfast part-fibre deal.
The provider is generally well priced however, so is a good option for those who want broadband without a phone line to save money, with prices starting at just £25.99 per month:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fibre | 66Mb average | £25.99 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Save over £4/mth + No setup fee + Exclusive offers and discounts for Plusnet customers (Ends 16/10/2024) |
Read more about Plusnet in our review of their broadband service.
Zen Internet
Zen Internet now offer their superfast fibre plans without a phone line as standard, and customers have the option to add a digital voice line with 1000 minutes for £6 per month.
However, as with BT above, Zen Internet pricing is often on the higher side anyway, and customers are likely to find broadband and phone plans cheaper with another provider.
For example, Plusnet's entry-level superfast fibre deal currently costs £25.99 per month, while the equivalent broadband-only version from Zen costs £36 per month.
In this instance, seeking out a broadband provider without a phone line doesn't save money.
Broadband and phone deals
As we've covered sometimes going without a home phone line isn't always the cheapest option, and many of the cheapest broadband providers bundle broadband with a phone line.
With that in mind, it can be worth considering taking a broadband package with a home phone line and just not using it.
While that might seem frustrating for people who want the simplest option, it can be the cheapest way to get online, especially for people looking at superfast fibre to the cabinet broadband connections.
Here are some of the UK's current cheapest broadband plans:
Package | Broadband | Monthly price | Upfront price | Contract term | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Superfast | 61Mb average | £23 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Free setup | |||||
M125 Fibre Broadband | 132Mb average | £25 | Free | 18 months | |
Offer: Reduced price: £25 per month + No setup fee (was £35) | |||||
Fibre | 66Mb average | £25.99 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: Save over £4/mth + No setup fee + Exclusive offers and discounts for Plusnet customers (Ends 16/10/2024) | |||||
Fibre 2 | 65Mb average | £24 | Free | 24 months | |
Offer: £2 off for Vodafone pay monthly customers | |||||
Superfast Broadband | 61Mb average | £26 | £5 | 24 months | |
Offer: WiFi Max just £3/mth + (£5 refundable setup fee for new customers if applicable) |
As you can see, even with a home phone these are cheaper than some of their phone line free counterparts.
Summary: Broadband-only becoming the norm
As we move closer to the closure of the copper phone line network, due by the end of 2025, broadband only packages are increasingly becoming the standard default option for customers.
In addition, with the advent of digital phone lines that rely on mains electricity or a battery back-up in the event of a power cut, more of us will come to rely on our mobile phones for emergency calls as well as keeping in touch with friends and family.
Yet, that shouldn't overlook the potential exclusion of people who are reliant on their home phone, especially in emergency situations.
For people looking to save the most money, broadband without a phone line is available to over 98% of UK homes through superfast options from BT, Plusnet, and Direct Save Telecom, to full fibre and gigabit-capable plans from an even larger array of providers.
It's worth ensuring though that the broadband without a landline package is actually the cheapest option, especially when looking at providers like BT and Zen Internet who tend to price their packages higher to begin with.
To find the best deal, compare broadband in your area and order plans by price, as well as filter deals to those with or without a phone line.
